2019 R/V Preservation Work Weekends

The summer project season is fast approaching!  We could really use your help in preparing our research vessel, the R/V Preservation, for an exciting season of fun and interesting projects. We are working on some still-in-progress items and include a number of improvements for the new season. Please review the To Do List and Dream List to see if there is anything that you could help with. We invite you to join us and get to know our boat and a few key people that are familiar with all operations of the boat that you can learn from.  We'd love to share a weekend of boat work and camaraderie. 


This event is split into separate activities for each day of each weekend. Please register for each day you are able to attend so we can plan tasks and sleeping arrangements based on the headcount of those attending each day and their skill-sets.

Task Status

The task list below will be updated each work weekend (hopefully each day of work). Task progress will be reported in blue font and completed tasks will be marked "Done".

R/V Preservation To Do List - As of 05-01-19

Please Note: Tim Pranke is in charge of ALL painting projects on the R/V Preservation!  All painting instructions and procedures must be approved by Tim. Thank You!

Painting / Projects

  1. Pressure wash entire outside of boat - required each year.  (Launch Weekend)? Done.
  2. Grind/clean and repaint areas where they are pealing or rusted. - annual process.  Done as much as we can this year.
  3. Clean interior walls from mold.  Repaint areas if needed - annual process. 
  4. Inspect the rear wall and door. Clean, paint and reseal wall as necessary. Wall and door inspected.  Looking good for 2019.  May need painting by 2020?
  5. Clean bilge areas in all compartments. These high-moisture areas may need some paint work or primer applied if bare metal areas are noted.   Cleaned Engine bilge of slimy mess and cleaned walkway boards.
  6. Pull up old saturated engine absorbent pads and replace with new absorbent pads.  Order more pads as needed!  Pads were replaced under both engines.  More pads need to be ordered.
  7. Inspect and clean out mid-ship deck drains and pipes. Done.
  8. Paint Salon Cabin area above Gunnel.  ((White).  Done.
  9. Clean and paint the rear deck. (Preferably before Diver Benches are bolted in).  After paint, re-install the rubber deck mats.  Cleaned deck and replaced three rubber mats.  They were rotted and needed replacement for 2019
    • Tim repaired deck supports. We are contemplating some additional changes. We hope to weld them prior to painting. 

Mechanical / Electrical

  1. Re-Check the rear fittings on the new hydraulic steering - slight weep at a fitting still noted?   Checked OK!
  2. Refill/top off steering reservoir as needed.  Done.
  3. Check for oil leaks in the engine room and repair as needed.  Note the rest of the leaks (here) that can't be repaired this year.  Minimal and normal oil leakage has been noted. No additional service needs to be performed at this time.  Little leakage has been found.  Keep an eye on it for the 2019 season.
  4. New horn has been installed! Mountings/wiring may need to be modified and resealed on the roof?  Ken K working on new mount
  5. Mount dive ladder to dive platform. (Annual project).  Done.
  6. Chart "Battery Switches" and document to ensure a safe operating procedure to start engines in the event of a discharged battery.  In progress
  7. Check fresh water pump impeller on both engines?  (Change every other year). (Was change last in 5-2018). (Due 5-2020)
  8. Front bilge (Square hatch)  clean, sort and vacuum.
  9. Fix leaky Faucet on sink in galley.  Checked 5-2019 - No leak found at this time. Done.

Annual Maintenance - Engine   -   (See Parts Receipts Under Documents Section)

  1. Change oil on both engines.  Done.
  2. Change diesel fuel filters for both engines and fill with fuel.  Done.
  3. Change oil in both injector pumps.  New drain cocks have been installed, please use them to drain oil.  Done.
  4. Purchase and install a suitable size grease gun.  (Order larger tubes).  For fresh water engine cooling pumps. Done.
  5. Grease all four grease zerks on freshwater engine cooling pumps. (2) Done.
  6. Perform Compression test on Starboard engine.  When we pull injectors fall of 2019 we will perform compression test
  7. Check and Adjust valves on both port and starboard engines.  Done. 
  8. We will be pulling Fuel Injectors fall 2019 for overhaul.
  9. Check both engines Love Joy couplings for tightness.  They are connecting fresh water pumps to injector pumps. Done, OK!
  10. Check both alternator belts for wear and tightness if they are loose. Tightened starboard engine alternator belt and tried to tighten the belt on Port engine alternator.  found the belt to be to long to tighten on port engine.
  11. Pick up Additive for fuel.  Found a bottle of additive in bilge to use up before we order more.
  12. Change fluid in both transmissions - take test samples and send out first.  Testing indicated that both transmissions should be changed.  The port side transmission has a reading of 12 for lead deposits.  6 is max!!  Fluid was changed in both transmissions    7-6-2019 at 1071 hours on Port side and 1097 hours on starboard side.  Test result in RV Preservation "Parts Receipts" section of the documents. 
  13. Engine Hours (as of the beginning of 2019 season) after completing above service work - Port =   _1089.7_  Starboard = _1062.7_
  14. The Port engine had _968_ hours at the beginning of 2018 and the Starboard engine had _945_ hours at the beginning of 2018. 
  15. Total Hours put on engine in 2018 - Port _121.7___  Starboard_117.7___ 

Annual Maintenance - Boat

  1. Remove tarp and PVC framing from the boat.  (Haul back to Cities and store in PK's Barn.)  Done.  Old tarp was ripped and will need a new one Fall 2019!!
  2. Check all Anodes/zinc pencils - On Hull, Rudders etc, and zinc pencils in heat ex-changers on Transmissions (1 each trans).  Zinc pencils can be purchased from Marine Parts Resources. pt# CME0 Link to website,  - Please Note: The bag of Zincs are Located on the front shelves in the head, top starboard side.  Zincs have not been installed as of the end of 2018 season.  The starboard side is seized in its hole.  The cover will need to be removed and zinc pencil extracted to be able to replace it in the Starboard transmission cooling pipe.
  3. Grease both rudder posts and steering linkage. Done.
  4. Check both main batteries - add water if necessary (distilled water only). 
  5. Remove both coolant reservoirs to clean them out of debris collected over the years of use.  Done.
  6. Relocate coolant recovery tanks (plastic) to higher up in engine compartment. Done.
  7. Install both brass props - brass keys are stored in orange case in head or attached to props. (Make sure we use a large brass washer on Port side prop)  Done.
  8. Check tightness of Cutlass Bearing screws (8). Done.
  9. Check wiper blades and wiper motor operation. Replaced both wiper blades in 2018.  They are the cheap ones and will need to order better ones from Marine General!
  10. Replace drinking water filters and prepare the system for the season. Install new drain valves as appropriate!  Done.
  11. Prepare head system (chemical toilet) for season. Done.
  12. Replace batteries in CO sensor, smoke detectors, bilge heat sensor, and digital clocks.  (Except we are missing smoke detector)!!  Need to purchase new smoke detector for the 2019 season.  Done.
  13. Inspect all fire extinguishers, flip and roll dry chemical extinguishers to prevent chemical compaction - date and sign tags. Done.
  14. Inspect and install all safety equipment and check expiration dates for applicable items including First Aid bag, AED, O2 pack & extra O2 bottle.  First Aid bag needs to be gone through, items missing and need to be re-ordered and put back into the bag before the first voyage. Please Note:  Large extra O2 bottle is due for hydro.  Phil will bring exchange it for a current hydro and send out other to have the tank hydro tested and filled. Phil K bring up June 1, 2019 to install on the boat.
  15. Inspect all distress signal equipment, check expiration dates for applicable items.  Please Note:  There are 8 expired hand-held flares and 6 flare gun flares.  Both have current flare updates but old expired flares are still in Emergency flare bag!! Done.  Purchased more flares for the 12 gauge hand flare gun that were expired.
  16. Insert legal paper-work, license, registrations, and insurance info in designated areas.  (Phil K has electronics).
  17. Install and test all electronics to verify proper function!  Done.
  18. Verify operation of all switches and indicators on the boat console!  Done.
  19. Need new bulb (s) in Anchor light.  Purchase two!  Done.  changed them to LED bulbs
  20. Add air to Emergency Dingy and check for leaks.  Check Oars.  Mike Mack has Dingy and is repairing it over the 2018 - 2019 winter season. Dropped off by Mike Mack after repair during the winter on Friday May 24.  Done.  Thank you Mike M!!
  21. Clean debris out of all deck drains. Done.
  22. Replace scupper flaps. Researching where to purchase new rubber flaps.  PK found that Master-craft Ski Boats have a similar version of the flaps we need.  They were ordered by Phil K in 2019 and just need to install them.
  23. Inspect engine compartment intake ducting.  OK, Done.
  24. Final cleanup - clean and vacuum all carpet prior to leaving final weekend!  Phil K hopefully able to use my home carpet cleaner or rent one from Menards. 

Annual Maintenance - Compressor (this task is performed at Phil's Quality Automotive Inc  Phil Kerber's shop in Corcoran)

  1. Change oil on 5-Hp Honda engine - use AMSOIL 10W-40 synthetic small engine motor oil.  Start and run!! Done!
  2. Change oil in Bauer compressor - use human grade synthetic oil. Oil was very clean.  Due to change in 2020
  3. Check Spark Plug.  Replaced, Done.
  4. Remove lines and filter canisters (2) and O2 clean them, repack with new chemicals in both primary and secondary filtering systems. Done.
  5. Check paper air filter on the compressor.  One on the top of the radar mast. Checked air filter on intake of compressor.  OK, Done.  Air filter on intake by Radar mast has been changed.  Done.
  6. Please Note:  Make sure the O-Rings on Primary filter on both cap ends are good!   Need to order 4  more for future replacement.
  7. Check belt. OK Done.
  8. Check all hoses for wear and any damage.  OK Done.
  9. Check CO monitor to see if still showing pink (Pink = OK)  It was black and was replaced, Done.
  10. Check all water bleed drain valves.  Second pressure chamber release bleed valve is leaking slightly and may need replacement.  Leaky water bleed drain was checked and is OK!  Done.
  11. Check engine air filter and replace as needed.  Used Napa Pt # 2323.   checked OK!  Done.
  12. Clean any debris and dust from external parts of the compressor.  Done.
  13. The Scuba Compressor has _164.5__ hours on it at the beginning of 2018 and __191.2__  hours on it at the end of 2018.        Total hours on the compressor for 2018 is __26.7 hours______

Misc ongoing Tasks List During the Summer

  1. Change scuba compressor main filter canister seal rings that have a slight leak.
  2. Order more scuba compressor seal rings.
  3. Connect Anchor line Winch wiring
  4. Wire in more USB Ports.  Mount in by Cabinet by Microwave
  5. Rewire Helm to extend wiring and clean up the mess inside the helm.
  6. Mark all switches.  Order stick on name tags from Office Depot.
  7. Purchase and mount newer NMEA 2000 GPS Antenna
  8. Remount NMEA 2000 network hub and restring cables out of entanglement and organize to run in wiring loom.
  9. Install NMEA 2000 Network Cable to Radar Display
  10. Test AIS System transmitter.

Dream List / Projects

  1. Install rear roof to transom tarp.  Check on who can do it and the pricing (2019).
    • Provide new quotes on Canvas top for the rear deck.  See in-house canvas company at Spirit Lake Marina?  (2019)
  2. Design and build compressor containment for permanent outside mount.  Surrounding built and researching as to what we need to do to permanently mount it for the season. (2019)!
    • Researching?
  3. Redesign fresh air intake for the heater to draw air from cabin area instead of the bilge. 
  4. Install vent fans in back wall for ventilation
  5. Research purchase and Install AIS System Transmitter.  (Board approved - $400.00 - $700.00)  AIS System was purchased and installed by Ken K and Tim P June 8 - 10, 2019. Done.
  6. Design and install deck anchor roller and latch mechanism.
  7. Install high temp and low oil pressure light and buzzer alarms on both engines?  (See Phil K and Joel T).
  8. Check all sacrificial anodes & replace as necessary - swap any zinc anodes with aluminum (note: rudders and heat exchangers are currently protected by zinc anodes! )  Both transmissions need new zincs (2).
  9. Purchase an EPIRB? May not need if we have AIS distress calling??
  10. Replace Old Radar System.  Installed new Gamin Radar System June 8 -10, 2019.  GMR 18xhd w/1042 xsv Display.  Done.  
  11. Fabricate two new dipsticks for the transmissions.  (Measuring 9.375 or 9 3/8 inches from the underside of the cap on top of the dipstick).
