 We will be Sponsoring the "Eighth" Annual S.S. Meteor Preservation Project. Saturday and Sunday April 28 and 29, 2012

This is a very worthy cause and if we don't continue to preserve this one-of-a-kind Whaleback ship, it could be lost forever!

Please join us in preserving one of the only "Whaleback Ships" remaining in the world!

2009 Volunteers and 2011 Volunteers

Requirements / Recommendations:

1.      You must be 16 years of age or older.  (Unless other arrangements are made)

2.      Have your own Medical Insurance.

3.      This is a Project that requires the ability to do Physical work.

4.      Please bring any of your own safety equipment such as respirators masks, knee guards, gloves, coveralls, shoes, boots, hats and warm cloths. Optional:  Hard hat (Optional).

5.      A liability release form from SPM will need to signed and handed into the staff.

6.      Note:  Tools such as paint scrapers, brushes, wiping rags, cleaners, and some respirator masks will be provided. (Bring your own if you want).

S.S. Meteor Liability Release and Waiver Form

The last seven years we put this Project together, we had a great turn out. We broke a record of 70 plus volunteers in 2008. We have an average of 50 plus people helping out on this event! The folks from the Superior's Public Museum's Board of Directors were very appreciative with the efforts of all the organizations that helped on this event to make it successful!  Let’s try doing the same or better this year!

Here is a tentative list of tasks we need to perform:

1.    Housekeeping / Cleaning.

2.    Complete painting in engine room between overhead supports. 

3.    Continue Painting lower engine room. (Remove oil Barrel).

4.    Continue painting Rudder room.

5.    Polish Brass in pilot house and engine room and add spray lacquer to preserve it.

6.    Install new stool seats – screw down table edges that are popping off.

7.    Complete painting interior rear turret stairways.

8.    Continue cleaning porthole sills and paint.

9.      Clean, Prime and paint aft upper deck, hand rails and repaint red vent covers.

10.  Caulk swivel on vent.  It’s allowing water to get into the starboard side engine room.

11. Continue work on engine jacking gear.  Dick Giese on the hunt for a gear.

12. Clean and treat cloths lockers and under beds in crews quarters.

13. Remove broken Navigation light, glass is broken.

14. Remove Life boats and repair or rebuild mounts.  (weather Permitting)

15. Clean exhibit case glass, inside and out.

16. Clean crews’ quarters, make beds, etc.

17. Install solenoid on air piping to compressor for ship whistle.

18.  Weld new metal in various other rusted areas of the ship.

19.  More to come as project draws closer.

20. Welding more rust holes.  Weld a hasp on the previsions loading hatch cover.

21.  The large list of tasks continues to grow as the project draws near.

Date: Saturday and Sunday April 28 and 29, 2012

Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday and 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Sunday or…….

Where: S.S. Meteor Whaleback Museum in Superior Wisconsin on Barkers Island.

Lunch: Will be provided by Grandma's Restaurant.  (Breakfast you will be on your own).   

This year, we will be meeting at the Barkers Island Hotel restaurant both mornings for Breakfast at 7:00 AM.

Lodging: Can be provided for up to 20 people in various campers, boats and houses around the area free of charge, based on a first come first served bases.  

Note:  If you are staying in any of the campers or boats, please bring your sleeping bag, pillow and other sleeping accommodations.

If you prefer to stay in a Hotel, there are a few small Hotels in the local area.   Please Google “Hotels Superior Wisconsin” Mention you are there for the Meteor Project.

This year’s Saturday night program, we will once again have the “free” Buffet Dinner and speaker.  The speaker for this year will be Neel Zoss, Author of the book “McDougall’s Great Lakes Whalebacks”.  He will be talking about his book in relation to the S.S. Meteor.  It will be exciting.  Please don't miss it. 

Ask the staff of the Museum to bring you on a tour of the ship you normally don't see on a regular summer tour!
