Jay Hanson from Superior Scuba Charters and North Shore Scenic Cruises has helped the GLSPS on many projects. Jay has many years of experience as a Captain, dive shop owner, dive instructor and commercial diver.

Jay has taken a different path for the past few years and his scuba charters are no longer available. However, in 2012, Jay purchased the Wenonah which was previously used to transport people from Grand Portage, MN to Isle Royale, MI. He now offers day cruises on the North Shore of Lake Superior and is docked at the Silver Bay, MN Marina.

If you are interested in booking a day charter cruise on the North Shore of Lake Superior, please click on the logo above for information on joining a north shore day cruise.

GLSPS 2012 Programs and Projects Schedule

Completed January 25, 2012

Please Note:

Project Registration will be available as the Projects Leaders enter their Projects.

If Registration is not available for the project of interest, please check back daily.

The GLSPS 2012 Summer Programs and Project Schedule, indicated in RED on the events Calender, includes activities for both diving and non-diving members to participate in. We encourage non-diving members to assist with surface support and project documentation, whether keeping written notes or photographing the project work.

Please check out the Project Sponsors listed on the lower left of this web page.  These sponsors will provide free air fills and 1/2 off rental for any scuba gear needed for GLSPS projects you are participating in.  Please click on the logo to gain access to their website to find additional information.

  • Opening the season, we usually Present an Ice Diving Documentation Practice Class on a shipwreck in Lake Minnetonka.  In 2012, the ice was too unpredictable so the dives were cancelled for this year.  If you would like to learn more about documenting a shipwreck in an overhead environment, please contact the Leader of this project .   (Certain requirements are required for this dive).
  • In April every year, we plan a joint above water project between Superior Public Museums, LSMMA, and the GLSPS.  It involves a weekend of preserving and stabilizing the SS Meteor Whale-back on Barkers Island in Superior, WI.  This is an above water project for all non divers and divers to enjoy.  (Although encouraged, you do not have to be a member to join us)!
  • Two weeks before Memorial Day, we begin preparing our project boat, the R/V Preservation, for summer projects on Lake Superior.
  • The first part of June our Underwater Tools & Techniques class is held to provide training for use on tool and preservation techniques used for underwater stabilization and preservation work. Please don't hesitate to register for the class if interested.  The GLSPS will only run the class if we have six or more students.
  • July through September is when our underwater projects occur. As most of these projects occur in or near Lake Superior, a common launch point is the R/V Preservation, moored at Spirit Lake Marina in Duluth, MN.
  • Group size is limited on most projects so call the Project Leader to discuss opportunities.  They can provide a detailed description of the project and what your time commitment will be, as well as any requirements for participation.  Descriptions and Registering for each project is available by clicking on the Name of the Project in the "2012 Projects Schedule" section of this website page below.
  • If there is underwater work, you will need to bring cold-water diving gear.
  • If there is stabilization work needed, you will need to have completed the Tools and Techniques Class
  • These are work projects, so project supplies and fuel are provided by the GLSPS, but food expenses will be shared by the participating members.
  • New Levels of projects have been created in an index below the project list.  (Please read below).
  • It is required to have your own health Insurance to participate in any of the Projects.
  • It is also recommended to have D.A.N. Insurance or equivalent.
  • Liability Releases are required for each participant by clicking on Master Liability and Waiver Forms to print, read and sign before project starts.  The boat cannot leave the dock until all forms are signed and reviewed.

We hope you will be able to join us as a volunteer on a project.  We are certain you will have fun and make a difference in helping preserve maritime history!
