2016 R/V Preservation Work Weekends
This is an ambitious list of what we intend to complete in four weekends to prepare the R/V Preservation
for the summer project season. We hope to complete some still-in-progress items and include a number of improvements as well this spring. Please review the "To Do List"
and "Dream List"
see if there is anything that you could help with. We invite you to join with us and get to know the R/V Preservation
and more people in the GLSPS. We'd love to share a weekend of boat-work and camaraderie. With the R/V Preservation
and Phil's camper, we can usually house up to a dozen volunteers at a time!
This event is split into separate activities for each day of each weekend. Please register for each day you are able to attend so we can plan tasks and sleeping arrangements based on the skill-sets and headcount of those attending each day.
The task list below will be updated each work weekend (hopefully each day of work). Task progress will be reported in blue
font and completed tasks will be marked Done
R/V Preservation To Do List - As of 6-3-16
Please Note: Tim Pranke is in charge of ALL painting projects on the R/V Preservation! All painting instructions and procedures must be approved by Tim. Thank You!
- Pressure wash entire outside of boat - required each year. (Launch Weekend)? DONE
- Grind/clean and repaint all pealed/rusted areas - annual process. On-going throughout the season
- Check the top of the Pres (white roof areas) - completed 2014, verify good coverage. DONE
- Clean interior walls and repaint if needed - annual process. Cleaned, DONE
- Inspect rear wall and door. Clean, paint and reseal wall as necessary. Some rust is showing in corners of rear wall. Rust grinding sealing and painting needs to be done throughout the season. Throughout the season
- Clean bilge areas in all compartments. These high-moisture areas may need some paint work or primer applied if bare metal areas are noted. DONE
- Clean and paint the rear deck. After paint, re-install the new rubber deck mat (installed last fall).
- Tim repaired deck supports. We are contemplating some additional changes. We hope to weld them prior to painting.
- Check the rear fittings on the new hydraulic steering - slight weep at a fitting still noted? Refill / top off reservoir as needed. DONE
- Remove, rebuild, and re-install the starboard engine fuel injector pump. DONE
- Pump was removed Fall 2015 and is at Diesel Injection Specialists Inc. for rebuild. We are in contact with re-builder and will make two modifications to reduce the chance of coupler slippage. DONE
- Machine a key way in both injection pumps to assure no slipping of the couplers on the shaft. DONE
- Starboard engine injector pump coupler still needs to be purchase and machined to proper new shaft size. DONE
- Add oil drain hardware to each injection pump to be able to easily change oil in the injection pumps. Installed a quarter turn valve for draining oil in each injector pump. DONE
- Test injectors from the overheated engine based on recommendation from Diesel Injection Specialists Inc. Six Injectors overhauled and new tips were installed on starboard engine only. DONE
- Next Duluth trip, pull and bring back! DONE
- Now at Diesel Inj. Spec. DONE
- Remove, modify, and re-install the port engine fuel injector pump. DONE
- Next Duluth trip, pull and bring back! DONE
- Now at Diesel Inj. Spec. Picked up and brought north. DONE
- Key way cut, oil drain added and new key made and installed. DONE
- Remove, flush and reseal both heat exchangers. DONE
- Both were removed Fall 2015 and brought to Carlberg Radiator for rebuild. DONE
- Rebuild complete - stored over winter in Phil's barn! Moved to boat and installed
- Both heat exchangers mounted back on engine and had all hoses replaced. Starboard side engine heat ex-changer had a new mount installed along with a tee pipe to supply hot coolant to hot water heater. DONE
- Still experience some vibration while under way, our next procedure will be to recheck engine alignment - before and after launch? (Will check after launch to accommodate flexing of hull)
- Locate source of slight oil leak on starboard engine. Removed cleaned and resealed after oil was removed. DONE
- New horn has been installed! Mountings/wiring may need to be modified?
- Dive ladder was struck and damaged last fall in Marina! DONE??
- Has been brought back for rework! An attempt to straighten ladder not very successful. Still slightly bent and cannot put pins in the swivels. The ladder will need to have the holes drilled bigger to accommodate the miss alignment. This will need to be performed before use.
- Re-seal wires in radar mast? Some leakage was reported along wire trough on roof. DONE
- Chart "Battery Switches" and document to ensure a safe operator procedure to start engines in the event of a discharged battery. Started!
- Change fresh water pump impeller on port engine. Repack front seal with new packing rope seal. (Starboard impeller was done last year. (Replaced 8-2015). DONE
- Starboard front fresh water pump rope seal needs to be done yet! DONE
Annual Maintenance - Engine
- Change oil on both engines. DONE
- Change diesel fuel filters for both engines and fill with fuel. DONE
- Change oil in both injector pumps. DONE
- Repack all white lithium grease mechanisms on freshwater engine cooling pumps. DONE
- Repack new packing in front shaft of fresh water pumps. DONE
- Rocker arms and push-rods were replace with good used parts from extra engine. DONE
- Engine Hours after above has been performed - Port = 766 Starboard = 745
- The Port engine had 83 hours put on it in 2015 and the Starboard engine had 81 hours put on it. (Less on the Starboard because of breakdown).
Annual Maintenance - Boat
- Remove tarp and PVC framing from boat. Haul back to Cities and store in PK's Barn. DONE
- Grease both rudder posts. DONE
- Check both main batteries - add water if necessary (distilled water only). DONE
- Install both brass props - brass keys are stored in orange case in head or attached to props. DONE
- Check wiper blades and wiper motor operation. Checked out OK! Need New Wipers!! DONE
- Replace drinking water filters and prepare system for season. DONE
- Prepare head system (chemical toilet) for season. DONE
- Replace batteries in CO sensor, smoke detectors, bilge heat sensor and digital clocks. DONE
- Inspect all fire extinguishers, flip and roll dry chemical extinguishers to prevent chemical compaction - date and sign tags. DONE
- Inspect and install all safety equipment and check expiration dates for applicable items including: First Aid bag, AED, O2 pack & extra O2 bottle. First Aid bag gone through, items missing order in put into bag and are ready to go. DONE
- Inspect all distress signal equipment, check expiration dates for applicable items. Updated flares - DONE
- Insert legal paper-work, license, registrations and insurance info in designated areas. DONE
- Install and test all electronics to verify proper function! DONE
- Verify operation of all switches and indicators on the boat console! DONE
- Horn is only working intermittently. Replace switch? Switch and horn ok at this time!
- The power point (12V) plug in not working. Need it to work for the defrost fan!!
- Clean debris out of all deck drains (scuppers!). OK, DONE
- Inspect engine compartment intake ducting. Seal slit in pipe on port side. DONE
- Final cleanup - clean and vacuum all carpet prior to leaving final weekend! DONE
Annual Maintenance - Compressor (this is done at Phil Kerber's shop in Corcoran)
- Change oil on 5-Hp Honda engine - use AMSOIL 10W-30 synthetic small engine motor oil. DONE
- Change oil in Bauer compressor - use human grade synthetic oil. DONE
- Remove lines and filter canisters and O2 clean them, repack canisters with new chemicals in both primary and secondary filtering systems. DONE
- Check paper air filters at compressor and at air intake on radar mast. OK - DONE
- Check belts. OK - DONE
- Check all hoses for wear and any damage. OK - DONE
- Check CO monitor to see if still showing pink (Pink = ok) Replaced with new disc. DONE
- Check all bleed drain valves. OK - DONE
- Clean any debris and dust form external parts of the compressor. DONE
- Install wet muffler for scuba compressor - can be installed with the compressor! DONE
- The Scuba Compressor has 121 hours on it (Last year we use it for 10 hours).
- Install rear roof to transom tarp.
- Steve Daniel has Tom Peterson working on this.
- Design and build compressor containment for permanent outside mount.
- Fresh water heater installed - need to invert switch, occasional accidental "ON"! DONE
- Install cabin heater/defroster. Water lines to engine - 12V to switch. Started
- Being researched? Started.
- Design and install deck anchor roller and latch mechanism.
- Rudder position indicator. Started
- Mounted in dash - need sending unit mounted and wiring completed! Started!
- NEW RUBBER RAFT? Picked up a donated raft from Dick Giese. Has small hole in it. The patching will need to be done before launch. Started.
- Install high temp alarm on both engines? Started!
- Water flow indicator for compressor wet exhaust?
- Check all sacrificial anodes & replace as necessary - swap any zinc anodes with aluminum (note: rudders are currently zinc anodes! heat exchangers)
- Build diver friendly benches out of metal and plastic decking boards for back of transom.
- Register MMSI Number with the Coast Guard. - Distress GPS Coordinates option on the Marine Radio. Need to register through Boats US / West Marine. Here is the link. http://www.boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/ObtainMMSI#!
