Jay Hanson from Superior Scuba Charters and North Shore Scenic Cruises has helped the GLSPS on many projects. Jay has many years of experience as a Captain, dive shop owner, dive instructor and commercial diver.

Jay has taken a different path for the past few years and his scuba charters are no longer available. However, in 2012, Jay purchased the Wenonah which was previously used to transport people from Grand Portage, MN to Isle Royale, MI. He now offers day cruises on the North Shore of Lake Superior and is docked at the Silver Bay, MN Marina.

If you are interested in booking a day charter cruise on the North Shore of Lake Superior, please click on the logo above for information on joining a north shore day cruise.

HomeJust For Fun

Just For Fun

In 1999, we completed our pilot sink-a-ship project by sinking the Just For Fun, our 37-foot ferro-cement sailboat in Beaver Bay. This created a lot of interest in the DNR. We sent a letter in January to Allen Garbor, the commissioner of the DNR, requesting State Parks division to work with us to evaluate the feasibility of intentionally sinking a larger vessel. The DNR responded with an expression of interest and commending us on our leadership. They have requested that we write a project proposal.

We will be working with the Region 2 DNR Planner, Jim Weseloh, and the Regional Parks Manager, Jim Willford, to address all the issues involved. We are currently working on a proposal that would result in the intentional sinking a much larger vessel that would have historical significance to the north shore of Lake Superior.

There was a good turn out of both boat and shore spectators to watch GLSPS sink the ferro-cement sailboat, Just For Fun, on June 12.

Thanks to everyone for helping make the first intentional sinking on the North Shore such a success!
